Why do I need an appointment for an ultrasound and not an X-ray?

Ultrasounds require appointments because they often need preparation, take longer and involve real time assessment by a trained sonographer and sometimes a radiologist. X-rays don’t usually require preparation and are quicker, which allows for walk in availability. Both X-rays and ultrasounds are performed by highly trained imaging professionals who focus on accuracy, safety and patient care. Here are more insights about the preparation, procedure and scans to explain further.

Capturing different images

Both imaging tests help your doctor understand what is happening inside your body based on your symptoms.

Very simply put, an X-ray takes a snapshot that captures a moment in time. This ‘photo’ shows bones and dense structures to help detect fractures and infections.

An ultrasound is more like a short video that captures clear images of soft tissues, blood flow and shows if lumps are solid or filled with fluid. Ultrasound shows movement and function, going well beyond capturing structure.

Different levels of preparation

There is no preparation required for an X-ray. However, many ultrasound examinations require specific preparation to ensure that clear images are captured for you to receive accurate results.

For example:

  • Abdominal ultrasounds usually require fasting for up to 12 hours
  • Pelvic ultrasounds may require a full bladder with preparation starting up to 2 hours prior to your exam
  • Some blood vessel and organ studies may need fasting and a full bladder that requires up to 8 hours of preparation time

When you make your booking, you will receive tailored instructions for the specific scan and in relation to the medication you take, especially if you have diabetes.

Different scanning procedures for X-ray and ultrasound

X-rays are relatively fast and straightforward to take, just like having your passport photo done. Our highly trained radiographer will help you sit, stand or lie in the correct position. They’ll ask you to keep still and then take the image.

We offer a walk-in service because:

  • This process only takes a few minutes, so patients don’t have to wait long to be seen
  • There’s virtually no preparation required, other than perhaps being asked to remove jewellery or pieces of clothing that have metal buttons and zips
  • We capture the image in minutes, and a radiologist views it later

Ultrasound scans are quite different because our sonographer will need to steadily run the probe over the area being scanned. They interpret what they see in real time and decide what to examine more closely, while capturing video and stills at various angles to confirm findings. This process requires careful attention, often involves changing positions to get the clearest view, and in some cases, direct input from a radiologist. This means the scan can take from 15 minutes to 45 minutes, and sometimes longer.

Appointments ensure:

  • Our sonographers have time to accurately capture small details and multiple angles to support an accurate diagnosis
  • Our radiologists are available to step into the scan if needed
  • You don’t have to wait longer than necessary (especially if you have a full bladder!)
  • You aren’t rushed when asked to change positions, hold your breath or provide feedback during a scan

What do you need for your X-ray or ultrasound appointment?

You will need a referral from your GP, specialist or allied health professional with notes about your clinical condition and area to be scanned. For X-rays, you can simply come to the clinic near your work or home, or make a booking. For an ultrasound, contact our bookings team on 1 300 648 958 to organise an appointment and receive your preparation instructions. They’ll also advise you regarding any costs. Please note that not all knee and shoulder scans are covered by Medicare.
