Making your Appointment

Do I need a referral for my scan?

In Australia you will need a valid referral from your GP, specialist, nurse practitioner or allied health professional before any diagnostic imaging can be performed.

This ensures that your scan is right for your medical needs and eligible for potential Medicare rebates.

Uncover more details here: Why do you need a referral for an x-ray or scan?

Do I need to make an appointment?

For most scans you will need to make an appointment so we can allocate enough time for your exam and minimise your waiting time.

At some locations you may be able to walk in for an x-ray and be seen quite quickly, but this depends on how busy the clinic is at that time.

It’s best to check with our booking team before you arrive.

Attending your Appointment

What should I bring to my appointment?

Please bring the following with you to the clinic:

  • Your referral form. We accept all referrals whether they’re printed on a Central Queensland Radiology form or another template provided by your healthcare provider.
  • Your Medicare card.
  • Your concession or private health fund card, if you have one.
  • Any earlier imaging scans and results if you have them.

How should I prepare for my scan?

Preparation will depend on the kind of scan you will be having.

For example, some tests may need no preparation at all, or some need you to not have eaten any food, while others may need you to have a full bladder.

You’ll receive clear instructions on what is needed when you make your booking.

You can get more insights about the different scans on our services pages.

How long will my scan take?

Once you have checked in at the clinic and are taken through for your scan, most x-rays take only a few minutes, while CT, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, and MRI scans may take between 15 and 45 minutes, or longer, depending on the area being imaged.

The time required for interventional procedures varies depending on the type of procedure.

Our staff will give you an approximate time when you book.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Comfortable clothing without metal zippers, buttons or clips is best. You may be asked to change into a gown for certain scans.

You can get more insights about requirements for different scans on our services pages.

Can I bring someone with me?

In most cases, yes, you can bring a family member or a friend along for support.

Please understand that due to safety reasons, they may not be able to go with you into some of the procedure rooms (for example, x-rays, CTs, MRIs, and nuclear medicine scans).

What if I’m pregnant or think I might be pregnant?

Please let us know before your appointment.

Some imaging tests, such as x-rays or CT scans, may be adapted or postponed to ensure your baby’s wellbeing.

The medical team will discuss this with you and if imaging goes ahead, will provide appropriate protective measures (e.g. covering parts of you with a lead apron, reducing the number of images taken, reducing the radiation dose) relative to the scans being done.

After your Appointment

What happens after my scan?

Your images will be analysed by our highly experienced radiologists.

A report and copy of the images are provided to your doctor or healthcare provider via a secure online system.

After 7 days you will also be able to view your images in our IQ Vue patient App.

Can I get a copy my images?

Yes, we can provide you with a digital or printed copy of your images if needed.

Simply speak with the reception team at your Central Queensland Radiology clinic for more details.

Pricing

How much will my scan cost me?

The cost, if any, of your scan will depend on numerous factors:

  • The type of scan you’ve been referred for
  • Whether contrast or other medication is used as part of the procedure
  • The body area being imaged, and
  • Whether the referral is eligible for a Medicare rebate

Our booking team will explain any fees or let you know if your scan will be bulk billed when you book your appointment, so there’re no surprises on the day.

Will my scan be covered by Medicare?

Many diagnostic imaging services have a Medicare rebate, however, this still depends on the type of scan and the referral.

Our booking team will tell you about any out-of-pocket costs before your appointment.

You can learn more in relation to Medicare rebates for MRI scans here: Why are some MRIs bulk billed and other not?

Can I claim my x-ray, CT, ultrasound and MRI scans on private health insurance?

Private health funds generally don’t cover outpatient imaging services. However, some hospital-based imaging or interventional procedures may be eligible if performed as part of a hospital admission. It’s best to check with your health fund prior to your procedure.
