Why do you need a referral for an x-ray or scan?
If you’ve ever wondered why you need to see your GP or specialist before getting an x-ray, scan or imaging-guided procedure, you’re not alone. It can feel like an extra step, but referrals are a legal requirement in Australia under the Radiation Safety Regulation 2021, Schedule 6. These rules exist to protect you and to make sure you receive the most appropriate, accurate and effective care.
